Federal Pacific Understands the Importance of SF6-Free Switchgear
Federal Pacific realizes the harm to our environment that can be caused by Sodium Hexafluoride (SF6) gas insulated switchgear. Our equipment has been SF6 -free since the company began selling switchgear in 1987.
How bad is SF6 for the environment?
Findings show that 1 kg of SF6 gas that is emitted into the atmosphere is the equivalent of more than 20,000 of kgs of CO2 in terms of warming effect. Simply put, SF6 is the most potent greenhouse gas known. One failure when using SF6 as a switchgear insulator is the harm created for our environment. This can take society many years and great cost to undo since SF6 can stay in the atmosphere for up to 3,200 years
New U.S. state and regional regulations have been implemented to help reduce the rate of SF6 emissions. One effort is the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI), which is a cap and investment initiative among the states of Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Virginia. RGGI targets repair and replacement of SF6 containing electrical equipment in many east coast states. More information can be found here about RGGI.
Federal Pacific’s commitment:
As Federal Pacific expands into new markets, such as renewable energy, we will always be dedicated to serving our customer’s needs. We will continue to make choices that are better for our environment, and as switchgear demand grows, Federal Pacific will continue to support SF6-free technologies with all of our switchgear offerings.
MAFESA plant in Mexico
Electro-Mechanical, LLC is expanding its presence in Bristol and Mexico to improve efficiencies and to support the launch of new products.
Early steps for this expansion include relocating its Mexico-based manufacturing arm, MAFESA, to a new, larger site. The new 106,000 square-foot facility will provide MAFESA with additional square footage for manufacturing and distribution space for low and medium-voltage transformers.
In addition, the MAFESA expansion will provide Federal Pacific, a division of Electro-Mechanical, with additional manufacturing space to improve production capabilities in Bristol, VA. These changes will allow Electro-Mechanical to increase capacity to meet growing demand for pad-mounted switchgear and introduce innovative, smart technology for the renewable energy market.
MAFESA production floor
“Electro-Mechanical continues to see record levels of demand across all our product lines. Increases are being seen in low and medium-voltage transformers, as well as in pad-mounted switchgear,” says COO Mike Stollings. “Beyond the growth in our Mexico facility, this move paves the way for significant production expansion and hiring at our Bristol facilities.”
