Federal Pacific Understands the Importance of SF6-Free Switchgear
Federal Pacific realizes the harm to our environment that can be caused by Sodium Hexafluoride (SF6) gas insulated switchgear. Our equipment has been SF6 -free since the company began selling switchgear in 1987.
How bad is SF6 for the environment?
Findings show that 1 kg of SF6 gas that is emitted into the atmosphere is the equivalent of more than 20,000 of kgs of CO2 in terms of warming effect. Simply put, SF6 is the most potent greenhouse gas known. One failure when using SF6 as a switchgear insulator is the harm created for our environment. This can take society many years and great cost to undo since SF6 can stay in the atmosphere for up to 3,200 years
New U.S. state and regional regulations have been implemented to help reduce the rate of SF6 emissions. One effort is the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI), which is a cap and investment initiative among the states of Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Virginia.
